Carol Clifford, President and Green Committee Rep
Dreama Fumia, Vice President and Publicity Chair
Barb Haley, Treasurer
Mickey Zimny, Secretary

The minutes from the May 20, 2010 General Meeting were approved as posted.

Welcome to one of our newest members, Sherry Morris!

PRESIDENT’S REPORT:
Rally Event Update
The Rally Event is scheduled for Thursday, October 21.  The golf is a 9-hole event (three separate 9-hole events played on all 3 courses).  Entry fee will be $45.00, which includes $20.00 Rally for the Cure fee, green fees, luncheon, and prizes.  Entry forms will be available the first part of August.  You may sign up as an individual or with a partner, as a threesome, or as a foursome (the committee will create foursomes where needed).  Hole sponsor forms will also be available the first part of August.  The cost is $40.00 or $200.00 for platinum sponsorship.  Space is limited for golf and the luncheon.

Rally Event – Volunteers Needed Committees chaired by the Lady Niner’s and The Putters have begun work on the Rally for the Cure events scheduled for October 21.  The committee responsible for the raffle needs volunteers to solicit donations (gifts, gift certificates from golf courses, from beauty shops, vendors, etc.) as well as volunteers to put raffle gift baskets together once all of the donated items have been gathered.  Contact Carol Clifford if you are able to help.

Golf Outings The La Paloma golf outing will be held Tuesday, August 3.  It will be an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start.  We currently have 26 members plus Dennis Johnson signed up to play.  The cost for the golf is $40 (payable to be advised).  Lunch is $15.00 payable to QCLGA.  Lunch, which will be out on the patio at the course right after golf, will be taco salad, dessert, tea/lemonade, and includes tax and tip.  Bring $5.00 if you want to enter Dennis’s tournament.  Winners will be announced at lunch.  We will play from the forward tees.  Participants should organize their own carpools.

A golf outing to Starr Pass has also been organized for Thursday, September 24, while our course is closed for overseeding.  There will be tee times starting at 8:00 a.m., and the cost for golf is $35.00, payable at the course when you check-in.  Lunch will be “on your own” in the restaurant at the course.  A sign-up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board in the Pro Shop by the first week of August.

VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT:
Green Committee
As a reminder, the Green Committee minutes are posted on our website for review.  Green Committee meetings are also open to guests and are normally held the first Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m. in the Gold Room at the Madera Clubhouse.  The primary topic of discussion at the July 12th meeting was the Quail Bunker Project.  It is going well, although it was reported on the HOA website that due to a maintenance issue, completion is delayed.  The Quail course remains open with unfinished areas treated as “Ground Under Repair.”  Golfers must take relief from these areas.  A summer rotation of closing each of the three nines for three days of the week for maintenance has begun.

In June there was a main pump failure.  This is the pump which fills the lakes from which the golf courses are watered.  The backup plan is to buy water from QC Water Company.  Unfortunately, QC Water Company experienced failure of two of its three pumps, so the amount of water available for purchase for the golf course was limited.  (QC Water Company’s primary focus is to supply water to residents.)  Thus, the course suffered from a lack of water for twelve days.  The main pump has been replaced with a new one, and now the course can be watered as needed.  It will, however, take some time for the course to recover.

Dennis reported two outside tournaments scheduled for August:  a Special Olympics tournament (72-80 players) on August 8th and a 980 Club Tournament (48 players) on August 28th.

The QCLGA brought up the topic (again) of the hot rake handles.  Several ideas were discussed including wrapping with duct tape and rubber handle “sleeves.”  Tom Cunningham took the action to investigate.

TREASURER’S REPORT:
We have $6286.79 in our checking account and $700.00 in our savings account for a total of $6986.79.  Our reserves include:

$1247.44  Junior Golf
$1748.13  Member/Guest
$1542.00  Ringers, Birdies & Chip-ins
$  141.75  SD Telegraph Tournament

To date we have 150 members.

Changes/improvements to the QCLGA membership application were discussed, along with the process by which an application is processed.  Additional suggestions are welcome.  Please contact Barb Haley.

TOURNAMENT CHAIR’S REPORT:
The following dates have been tentatively scheduled for the 2011 QCLGA Major Tournaments.  We continue to meet with the QCMGA (Jim Robinson) and Dennis Johnson to work out any trades or conflicts.

Round Robin Partner Match Play
:  Thursday, February 24; Tuesday, March 1, Thursday, March 3.
President’s Cup
:  Thursday, May 5; Monday, May 9; Thursday, May 12.
Round Robin Individual Match Play:  Thursday, July 7; Monday, July 11; Thursday, July 14.
Club Championship
:  Thursday, November 3; Tuesday, November 8; Thursday, November 10.

Interclub qualifying dates will be announced at the beginning of 2011 when the calendar dates have been firmed up.

The Tournament Committee thanked all who played in the Round Robin Individual Match Play.

Awards were given out to the winners of the “Stars and Stripes” bonus contest held during the July 1 playday.  Congratulations to Jan Ranney, Laura Colbert, Fran Walker, and Carol Clifford.  All remaining contestants received a consolation prize.

Just a reminder to mark your calendars for the Club Championship in November.  Dates are Thursday, November 4; Tuesday, November 9; and Thursday, November 11.

Our “Beat the Pro” event is on Thursday, September 2.  If your net score is better than Dennis Johnson’s gross score, you win an extra prize in addition to the regular place money.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:
AWGA/Southern District
Southern District held its Summer Scotch Tournament at Oro Valley on July 19.  Nine QCLGA members participated, and Bonny Wilcox and Karen Stensrud took first place in their flight.  Coming up is Fall Partners held at Rio Rico on October 19 and 20.  Forms will be available September 5, and opening day is September 19.  Carol Clifford will send out a reminder.  For additional information see the Southern District website for details (sdwga.com).

Handicap When posting a tournament score, please be sure to change the type to a “T” for tournament last.  If this is not done, the system will revert back to the default.  Also, please review your scores online periodically to ensure accuracy.  Over the past two weeks the servers for EZLINKS have been moved from Chicago to Golf.net in North Carolina, which may result in errors or delayed postings.

Member/Guest Tournament The QCLGA Member/Guest Tournament is scheduled for April 6 and 7 of next year.  Although that seems like a long time from now, a member is urgently needed to step forward soon and volunteer to chair that tournament.  Widge Heintz has graciously agreed to spend time with that member, reviewing things that she learned when she chaired the tournament last year.  Co-chairs to share the responsibility will also be considered.  Interested members please contact Carol Clifford or Dreama Fumia (or any board member).

No-Frills Member/Guest Day This tournament is scheduled for Thursday, August 5 and will be a shotgun start.  Cost is $50/team and includes golf, lunch, and prizes.  Susan Kuehn has entry forms, which need to be turned in as soon as possible.  To date we have 14 teams entered.  For those who would like to participate but don’t have a partner, let Susan know and she will try to find a partner.

Publicity With board approval, Bonny Wilcox has agreed to become our new publicity chairperson.  She would like to have a volunteer assist her with the photography portion of her responsibilities.  The goal is to give QCLGA as much publicity both inside and outside the community as possible.  Dreama Fumia will assist with the transition.

Robson Challenge The 2010 Robson Challenge will be held on Wednesday, November 17 at Robson Ranch in Eloy (Casa Grande).  This year each club will send a team of 16 plays plus the Pro (increased from 14 plus the Pro from last year).  This is a net competition.

Jeanne Reinhardt has been keeping a list of each player’s net scores for individual posted rounds on applicable Thursday playdays.  (Match play is an example of a non-applicable score.)

The low scores within stipulated categories will determine the players selected for the team.  QCLGA members are reminded that in order to qualify, a player must have participated in 6 playdays for which an individual score has been posted since last year’s Robson Challenge.

Interclub We are in second place for low net (half a point behind Torres Blancas/Canoa Ranch) and in third place for low gross (40.5 points behind Desert Hills and 15 points behind San Ignacio).  We have only two matches left at Desert Hills on August 2 and at Green Valley Country Club on August 27.  The qualifying dates for Desert Hills are today and July 29 (both Thursdays).

Rules:  Bonny Wilcox has graciously agreed to continue to serve as chair of the Rules Committee for the remainder of this year (or until another member volunteers).  Bonny will assist in any way with the transition to a new Rules chairperson.  The following rule was discussed:
ABNORMAL GROUND CONDITIONS – RULE 25

Mandatory Ground Under Repair
:
All newly-sodded areas on Quail/Coyote are mandatory GUR (Ground Under Repair).  That means you must take relief from the areas whether marked as such or not.

RELIEF:
Interference by an “abnormal ground condition” or ground under repair occurs when a ball lies in or touches the condition or when the condition interferes with the player’s stance or the area of her intended swing.  (Intervention on the line of play is not, of itself, interference under this rule unless the player’s ball is on the putting green.)  The player must lift the ball and drop it, without penalty, within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief.

SUGGESTION BOX:
No new suggestions were submitted.

NEW BUSINESS:
Web Update
For some time we have discussed the need to review our current QCLGA website solution.  The review is motivated by three factors:
1)
Though we have local expertise available, Microsoft no longer supports our web application, MS FrontPage.
2)
Greater functionality is now available.
3)
In the context of continuous improvement, it’s been a while since we’ve significantly improved our website.

Recently the Board approved the formation of a committee to explore other website options and provide a recommendation to the Board.  To that end, a committee has been formed.  Members are:  Fran Walker, Mickey Zimny, Bonny Wilcox, Jeanne Reinhardt, Karen Doyle, and Dreama Fumia (with a potential seventh member who has not yet confirmed her status).  Carol Clifford will act as advisor along with other advisors, e.g., Dennis Johnson and Carol Brett, brought in as needed.  A plan for this effort has been drafted and distributed to the committee.  Our first committee meeting will be held on July 27.  We plan to provide a report and recommendation to the Board in November, and if approved, to the General Membership at our November Annual meeting.

Learning About Heatstroke Laura Colbert (assisted by JoAnn Salazar) shared her experience and tips about how to keep cool on the golf course and avoid heatstroke.  During the discussion afterward it was reiterated that if there are health concerns on the golf course (or elsewhere in QC) to
1) call 911 being sure to give them the address of Quail Creek Golf Course on Quail Crossing Blvd in Green Valley;
2) call QC Patrol at 631-0079;
3) call the QC Pro Shop at 393-5802 (if on the golf course).

The meeting was adjourned at 1:34 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Mickey Zimny
QCLGA Secretary

QCLGA BOARD MEETING - JULY 8, 2010

The meeting was called to order by President Carol Clifford on July 8, 2010 at 12:20 p.m. in the back room of the Grill.  Attendees included:

Officers
:
Carol Clifford, President and Green Committee Rep
Dreama Fumia, Vice President and Publicity Chair
Barb Haley, Treasurer
Mickey Zimny, Secretary
Karen Doyle, Tournament Chair

Committee Chairs:
Marilyn Mazeika, Past President
Ruth Foy, Birdies/Chip-Ins/Ringers/Hole-in-One Chair
Bonny Wilcox, Rules Chair
Mary Lou Johnson, Hospitality Co-Chair
Elizabeth Heintz, 2010 Member/Guest Chair
Fran Walker, SDWGA/AWGA Representative

The minutes from the May 5, 2010 board meeting were approved as posted.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT:
La Paloma Outing (August 3)
This will be an 8 a.m. shotgun, and the green fees will be $40.  So far we have 17 ladies signed up to play.  Further details will be communicated as soon as they are available.

Green Committee Report The Green Committee meeting was rescheduled to July 12.  Dreama Fumia will attend in Carol Clifford’s place as Carol will be on vacation.  The Board requested that Dreama remind the Committee about the rake handles being too hot to handle (they could be wrapped with duct tape to remedy this).  Also a concern is that the grass on the old holes on the greens appears to die.  This issue is being worked on.  An update to the bunker project, which will be communicated to the membership at the next general meeting, is expected at the July 12 Green Committee meeting.

Open Positions We need to actively recruit a chairperson for the 2011 Member/Guest Tournament on April 6 and 7.  Elizabeth Heintz has agreed to act in an advisory capacity to the 2011 chairperson.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT:
Open Positions
In addition to the 2011 Member/Guest Tournament chair, we are seeking volunteers for the Publicity Chair (someone to assume all or part of the duties) and vacancies for the Rally for the Cure (need QCLGA co-chair for the luncheon and raffle, which will be hosted by the Putters and chair for the 2011 auction hosted by QCLGA and co-chaired by Lynda Rivard, representing the “Relay for Life” local organization).  Ruth Foy volunteered to co-chair the golf event, which will be hosted by the Lady Niners.

TREASURER’S REPORT:
To date we have $6747.00 in our checking account and $600.00 in our savings account (which accumulated $.23 interest).  Our actual versus budget is where it should be.  We now have 149 members with the 150th application in the Pro Shop!

Barb Haley suggested we add an “area of interest” on our application form to better understand where a new member might want to volunteer her expertise and/or interest to QCLGA.

TOURNAMENT CHAIR’S REPORT:
Karen is working with Jim Robinson of the QCMGA to formulate a tentative schedule for 2011 with the dates of the QCGLA major tournaments being in the same general timeframe as 2010.  Conflicts with Southern District tournaments and the Desert Hills Member/Guest Tournament are being taken into consideration.  It was further agreed that the spacing and timing of QCLGA major tournaments appear to strike a fair balance between year-round resident members and winter-resident members.

There have been no discussion/comments/concerns from the membership regarding 2-day tournaments versus 3-day tournaments.  Therefore, this subject is closed, at least for the time being.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Southern District
Between QC and Desert Hills there are 8 people signed up to play in the July 19th tournament at Oro Valley.

Birdies/Chip-In’s/Ringers Ruth Foy will be out of town from July 21 through August 11.  Jeanne Reinhardt should be contacted as her back-up.

Handicap Ladies should periodically check their scores on the AWGA website as errors can result in an incorrect handicap for 15 days.  This happened recently when a member had to play for the 15 days with a four stroke lower handicap.  If you find an error, let Susan Warburton know and she will correct it.

Continue to put play cards in the box in the Pro Shop.  If you play late and the Pro Shop is closed, put the card in the next time you play.

Everyone is doing a great job getting the scores posted on the correct course!

The qualifying dates for Desert Hills are July 22 and July 29 (both Thursdays).

Member/Guest Tournament Checks were presented to The Animal League of Green Valley ($450) and Friends in Deed ($400) by Elizabeth Heintz.  This was money from the 2010 Member/Guest Tournament.  Both organizations, particularly Friends in Deed, were very appreciative.  Thank you letters from both organizations will be put in the Member/Guest Tournament file along with Widge’s notes and additional paperwork.  This file should assist future chairpersons.

Widge reiterated the concern about finding a chairperson for the 2011 Member/Guest Tournament as she held her first meeting in August and it is already July.  She also volunteered her services as advisor to the 2011 M/G chairperson.  Carol Clifford will bring this to the attention of the general membership at the July 22 meeting.

Nominations and Elections The committee continues to work on a slate of candidates for the 2011 QCLGA Board.  Their goal is to solicit at least two members for each position.

Hospitality:  The Hospitality Committee met with Irena Birdsall, our newest member.  Also, cards were sent to Nancy Planck, Jane Brownlee, and Sandi Hrovatin.

SUGGESTION BOX:
There were no suggestions in the Suggestion Box.

NEW BUSINESS:
Complaint
:
The QCLGA Board reviewed a written complaint from a member.  After careful review and discussion the Board determined that this complaint was without merit.  A letter will be sent to the member via U.S. Mail and no further action will be required.

Standing Rule #3:  A discussion was held about whether to modify Standing Rule #3, which addresses “no shows” and “late or no cancellations.”  Currently we have no policy but refer to past practices.  The options considered were:
a) Change wording to be more specific, i.e. specific conditions warrant specific actions
b) Change wording to refer to a policy from the Tournament Committee
c) Make no change and continue to have the Board assess each incident on its own merit
.
Because these occurrences are relatively uncommon and circumstances can vary, the Board agreed to leave the wording as is and review situations on a case by case basis.

Website Update:  Dreama Fumia will work with a committee (Fran Walker and Mickey Zimny at a minimum) to explore future QCLGA website options.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Mickey Zimny
QCLGA Secretary
