PRESIDENT’S REPORT:
Rally Event Update:
The Rally Event is
scheduled for Thursday, October 21. The golf is a 9-hole
event (three separate 9-hole events played on all 3
courses). Entry fee will be $45.00, which includes $20.00
Rally for the Cure fee, green fees, luncheon, and prizes.
Entry forms will be available the first part of August. You
may sign up as an individual or with a partner, as a
threesome, or as a foursome (the committee will create
foursomes where needed). Hole sponsor forms will also be
available the first part of August. The cost is $40.00 or
$200.00 for platinum sponsorship. Space is limited for golf
and the luncheon.
Rally Event – Volunteers Needed:
Committees chaired by the Lady Niner’s and The Putters have
begun work on the Rally for the Cure events scheduled for
October 21. The committee responsible for the raffle needs
volunteers to solicit donations (gifts, gift certificates
from golf courses, from beauty shops, vendors, etc.) as well
as volunteers to put raffle gift baskets together once all
of the donated items have been gathered. Contact Carol
Clifford if you are able to help.
Golf Outings:
The La Paloma golf outing
will be held Tuesday, August 3. It will be an 8:00 a.m.
shotgun start. We currently have 26 members plus Dennis
Johnson signed up to play. The cost for the golf is $40
(payable to be advised). Lunch is $15.00 payable to QCLGA.
Lunch, which will be out on the patio at the course right
after golf, will be taco salad, dessert, tea/lemonade, and
includes tax and tip. Bring $5.00 if you want to enter
Dennis’s tournament. Winners will be announced at lunch.
We will play from the forward tees. Participants should
organize their own carpools.
A golf outing to Starr Pass has also been organized for
Thursday, September 24, while our course is closed for
overseeding. There will be tee times starting at 8:00 a.m.,
and the cost for golf is $35.00, payable at the course when
you check-in. Lunch will be “on your own” in the restaurant
at the course. A sign-up sheet will be posted on the
bulletin board in the Pro Shop by the first week of
August.
VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT:
Green Committee:
As a reminder, the Green
Committee minutes are posted on our website for review.
Green Committee meetings are also open to guests and are
normally held the first Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m. in
the Gold Room at the Madera Clubhouse. The primary
topic of discussion at the July 12th meeting was
the Quail Bunker Project. It is going well, although it was
reported on the HOA website that due to a maintenance issue,
completion is delayed. The Quail course remains open with
unfinished areas treated as “Ground Under Repair.” Golfers
must take relief from these areas. A summer rotation
of closing each of the three nines for three days of the
week for maintenance has begun.
In June there was a main pump failure. This is the pump
which fills the lakes from which the golf courses are
watered. The backup plan is to buy water from QC Water
Company. Unfortunately, QC Water Company experienced
failure of two of its three pumps, so the amount of water
available for purchase for the golf course was limited. (QC
Water Company’s primary focus is to supply water to
residents.) Thus, the course suffered from a lack of water
for twelve days. The main pump has been replaced with a new
one, and now the course can be watered as needed. It will,
however, take some time for the course to recover.
Dennis reported two outside tournaments scheduled for
August: a Special Olympics tournament (72-80 players) on
August 8th and a 980 Club Tournament (48 players)
on August 28th.
The QCLGA brought up the topic (again) of the hot rake
handles. Several ideas were discussed including wrapping
with duct tape and rubber handle “sleeves.” Tom Cunningham
took the action to investigate.
TREASURER’S REPORT:
We have $6286.79 in our checking account and $700.00 in our
savings account for a total of $6986.79. Our reserves
include:
$1247.44 Junior Golf
$1748.13 Member/Guest
$1542.00 Ringers, Birdies & Chip-ins
$ 141.75 SD Telegraph Tournament
To date we have 150 members.
Changes/improvements to the QCLGA membership application were
discussed, along with the process by which an application is
processed. Additional suggestions are welcome. Please
contact Barb Haley.
TOURNAMENT CHAIR’S REPORT:

2011 when the calendar dates have been firmed up.
The Tournament Committee thanked all who played in the Round Robin
Individual Match Play.
Awards were given out to the winners of the “Stars and Stripes”
bonus contest held during the July 1 playday.
Congratulations to Jan Ranney, Laura Colbert, Fran Walker,
and Carol Clifford. All remaining contestants received a
consolation prize.
Just a reminder to mark your calendars for the Club Championship in
November. Dates are Thursday, November 4; Tuesday, November
9; and Thursday, November 11.
Our “Beat the Pro” event is on Thursday, September 2. If your net
score is better than Dennis Johnson’s gross score, you win
an extra prize in addition to the regular place money.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
AWGA/Southern District:
Southern
District held its Summer Scotch Tournament at Oro Valley on
July 19. Nine QCLGA members participated, and Bonny Wilcox
and Karen Stensrud took first place in their flight. Coming
up is Fall Partners held at Rio Rico on October 19 and 20.
Forms will be available September 5, and opening day is
September 19. Carol Clifford will send out a reminder. For
additional information see the Southern District website for
details (sdwga.com).
Handicap:
When posting a tournament score, please be sure to change the type
to a “T” for tournament last. If this is not done,
the system will revert back to the default. Also, please
review your scores online periodically to ensure accuracy.
Over the past two weeks the servers for EZLINKS have been
moved from Chicago to Golf.net in North Carolina, which may
result in errors or delayed postings.
Member/Guest Tournament:
The QCLGA Member/Guest
Tournament is scheduled for April 6 and 7 of next year.
Although that seems like a long time from now, a member is
urgently needed to step forward soon and volunteer to chair
that tournament.
Widge Heintz has graciously agreed to spend time with that
member, reviewing things that she learned when she chaired
the tournament last year. Co-chairs to share the
responsibility will also be considered. Interested members
please contact Carol Clifford or Dreama Fumia (or any board
member).
No-Frills Member/Guest Day:
This
tournament is scheduled for Thursday, August 5 and will be a
shotgun start. Cost is $50/team and includes golf, lunch,
and prizes. Susan Kuehn has entry forms, which need to be
turned in as soon as possible. To date we have 14 teams
entered. For those who would like to participate but don’t
have a partner, let Susan know and she will try to find a
partner.
Publicity:
With board approval, Bonny Wilcox has agreed to become our new
publicity chairperson. She would like to have a volunteer
assist her with the photography portion of her
responsibilities. The goal is to give QCLGA as much
publicity both inside and outside the community as
possible. Dreama Fumia will assist with the transition.
Robson Challenge:
The 2010 Robson Challenge will be held on Wednesday, November 17 at
Robson Ranch in Eloy (Casa Grande). This year each club
will send a team of 16 plays plus the Pro (increased from 14
plus the Pro from last year). This is a net competition.
Jeanne Reinhardt has been keeping a list of each player’s net
scores for individual posted rounds on applicable Thursday
playdays. (Match play is an example of a non-applicable
score.)
The low scores within stipulated categories will determine the
players selected for the team. QCLGA members are reminded
that in order to qualify, a player must have participated in
6 playdays for which an individual score has been posted
since last year’s Robson Challenge.
Interclub:
We are in second place for low net (half a point behind Torres
Blancas/Canoa Ranch) and in third place for low gross (40.5
points behind Desert Hills and 15 points behind San
Ignacio). We have only two matches left at Desert Hills on
August 2 and at Green Valley Country Club on August 27. The
qualifying dates for Desert Hills are today and July 29
(both Thursdays).
Rules: Bonny Wilcox
has graciously agreed to continue to serve as chair of the
Rules Committee for the remainder of this year (or until
another member volunteers). Bonny will assist in any way
with the transition to a new Rules chairperson. The following rule was discussed:
ABNORMAL GROUND CONDITIONS – RULE 25
Mandatory Ground Under Repair:
All newly-sodded areas on Quail/Coyote are mandatory GUR
(Ground Under Repair). That means you must take
relief from the areas whether marked as such or not.
RELIEF:
Interference by an “abnormal ground condition” or ground
under repair occurs when a ball lies in or touches the
condition or when the condition interferes with the player’s
stance or the area of her intended swing. (Intervention on
the line of play is not, of itself, interference under this
rule unless the player’s ball is on the putting green.)
The player must lift the ball and drop it, without penalty,
within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the
nearest point of relief.
SUGGESTION BOX:
No new suggestions were submitted.
NEW BUSINESS:
Web Update:
For some time we have discussed the need to review our current
QCLGA website solution. The review is motivated by three
factors:
1)
Though we have local expertise available, Microsoft no longer
supports our web application, MS FrontPage.
2)
Greater functionality is now available.
3)
In the context of continuous improvement, it’s been a while since
we’ve significantly improved our website.
Recently the Board approved the formation of a committee to explore
other website options and provide a recommendation to the
Board. To that end, a committee has been formed. Members
are: Fran Walker, Mickey Zimny, Bonny Wilcox, Jeanne
Reinhardt, Karen Doyle, and Dreama Fumia (with a potential
seventh member who has not yet confirmed her status). Carol
Clifford will act as advisor along with other advisors,
e.g., Dennis Johnson and Carol Brett, brought in as needed.
A plan for this effort has been drafted and distributed to
the committee. Our first committee meeting will be held on
July 27. We plan to provide a report and recommendation to
the Board in November, and if approved, to the General
Membership at our November Annual meeting.
Learning About Heatstroke:
Laura Colbert
(assisted by JoAnn Salazar) shared her experience and tips
about how to keep cool on the golf course and avoid
heatstroke. During the discussion afterward it was
reiterated that if there are health concerns on the golf
course (or elsewhere in QC) to
1) call 911 being sure to give them the address of Quail
Creek Golf Course on Quail Crossing Blvd in Green Valley;
2) call QC Patrol at 631-0079;
3) call the QC Pro Shop at 393-5802 (if on the golf course).
The meeting was adjourned at 1:34 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Mickey Zimny
